Stephen Ambrose is the best selling author who served as historical consultant on Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" and wrote what many consider to be the definitive book on the events of D-Day: June 6, 1944.
 
Stephen Ambrose Dies
Stephen Ambrose, historian, dies at 66.
Stephen E. Ambrose died early Sunday 13 October 2002 at a Bay St. Louis, Miss., hospital. He was 66.

Ambrose was a longtime smoker. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in April. Family members were with him when  he died at about 4 a.m. Sunday.

Ambrose spent much of his career as a relatively little known history professor until he hit the best-seller’s list with his 1994 book “D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climactic of World War II.”
 
 
Stephen's Background
Ambrose is regarded as one of the leading historical authors of our time. He is the founder and President of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans which officially opened on Tuesday 6 June 2000. He wrote what many consider to be the definitive book on the events of that day - "D-Day: June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II." 

Ambrose grew up in Wisconsin and earned his Bachelors Degree from the University of Wisconsin, his Masters from Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. In addition to his extensive writings, he worked for over 30 years as a respected professor of history, teaching at several colleges and universities around the country.

Mr. Ambrose' Bay St. Louis home is named "Merry Weather," after Meriwether Lewis. His Labrador is called Pomp, after the nickname of Sacagawea's son.

The family company, Ambrose-Tubbs Inc., is based in Helena, Montana. The family organization has offices in New Orleans and Helena, Montana. "Headquarters" are in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in a two story clapboard house by the Gulf of Mexico where Mr. Ambrose works and lives half the year. Hugh Ambrose, Research Assistant, Director of Operations just happens to be Stephen Ambrose's youngest son. John Tubbs, Mr. Ambrose's son-in law, acts as treasurer. Stephenie Ambrose, a daughter and historian, is the company secretary. Andy Ambrose helps run the historical tour company. Moira Ambrose, Stephen's wife, helps edit the first drafts of his books.

"Saving Private Ryan" - 24 July 1998 release by DreamWorks. Ambrose served as Historical Consultant on this Spielberg movie starring Tom Hanks. 

"DreamWorks Miniseries" - DreamWorks TV has reached a major deal with Stephen E. Ambrose and has secured rights to Ambrose's book "Citizen Soldiers." This will be DreamWorks TV first foray into telefilms. DreamWorks to make it into a miniseries. Oscar-winning film producer Mark Johnson will oversee development and production of the miniseries. "Citizen Soldiers: The U.S. Army From the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge  to the Surrender of Germany June 7, 1994-May 7, 1945" focuses on the Americans who liberated Europe from Hitler's tyranny and chronicles the lives of U.S. Army troops from the day after D-Day until the end of the war in  Europe. As reported in The Hollywood Reporter, 29 July 1998.
