. "Plunge" - 1998. Micro-budget British picture where Kate Winslet will be playing a cameo role. Directed by Max Newsom. Produced by his company Longboard Films. The movie was shot in fall 1998 in Cornwall, England with a budget of around $300,000. One of Winslet's friends was working on the picture and she volunteered on the spur of the moment to join in. The film is about a group of roadsweepers who decide to go surfing when they find a surfboard in a garbage bin. They head for Cornwall, home of English surfing, where they encounter a female roadsweeper, played by Winslet. As reported on page 7 of Daily Variety  Tuesday 28 April 1998. All this without the knowledge of her agent. "It had been her birthday the night before, so she had had only two hours' sleep. But she was great, and fit in perfectly," Newsom told the Sunday Telegraph.

"Holy Smoke" - 1999 release by Miramax Films starring Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel and Pam Grier. Directed by Jane Campion. Love story set in Australia and India. Shooting in Australia to begin June 1998.
