Like a Hole in the Head - Calista's next role? Could be. Fox Searchlight has optioned film rights to "Like a Hole in the Head", a novel by Jen Barbury. In the novel, Jill, a Los Angeles bookstore clerk, comes across a rare Jack London work. She sells the edition for a nice profit but then she is confronted by a big man who wants the book back. While trying to get the book back, she meets up with psychopaths, sleazy book dealers and minor league Hollywood players. As reported 27 May 1998.

Background - The road to "Ally McBeal" and stardom for this unpretentious petite young woman was paved with performances at Rutgers University, her Alma Mater, and in community theater productions.

For ten years Calista Flockhart performed and reaped critical acclaim for roles in off-off Broadway, off Broadway, daytime drama, and various TV series. She also taught aerobics in the lean times.

Calista Flockhart got her first big break, her Broadway debut as Laura in "The Glass Menagerie", the Tennessee Williams revival. Soon after, Calista won a bit part in the Robert Redford film "Quiz Show", her screen debut. She was cast as the bride-to-be in Mike Nichols' "Birdcage".

In New York "Three Sisters" opened on Broadway with the part of nasty Natasha being played by Calista Flockhart.

Friends of Calista wanted her to audition for a new show being cast, Ally McBeal, but she wanted to pursue her Broadway career. After much convincing she agreed to audition. She and producer David E. Kelley hit it off immediately and she was offered the part. Before she auditioned, hundreds of actresses had read for Kelley. "Ally McBeal" became an immediate success and is one of the most popular new shows on television.

Personal - Calista Flockhart is single and shares her home with her lovable Webster, a mutt of the terrier class.
