| Caitlin (Emma Caulfield), Michael (Lee Cormie, center)
and Kyle (Chaney Kley, right). |
The monstrous Matilda Dixon is ready to pounce on Michael
(Lee Cormie) and Caitlin (Emma Caulfield) at a lighthouse. |
Director Jonathan Liebesman discusses a scene with actors
Lee Cormie and Emma Caulfield. |
"Darkness Falls", the movie is based on the original short film, The Tooth
Fairy (a dark retelling of the common myth/folktale about an imaginary
being who rewards children who put their baby teeth under their pillow)
by screenwriter Joe Harris.
Kyle Walsh (Chaney Kley) must return home to confront his troubled past
and save his childhood sweetheart Caitlin (Emma Caulfield), and her younger
brother Michael from an unrelenting evil that has plagued the town of Darkness
Falls for more than one hundred and fifty years. Kyle must again face the
vengeful spirit of Matilda Dixon, "the Tooth Fairy," which drove him to
the brink of madness 12 years previously as a child. Kyle knows it will
be over if Matilda catches up with him in the dark.
You might recognize Emma Caulfield from Buffy the Vampire Slayer where
she played "Anya Emerson" in the 1997 series. Chaney Kley was seen in the
2001 movie Legally Blonde where he played Brandon.
Director Jonathan Liebesman takes us through a light and sound night
terror which features the Tooth Fairy.
Darkness Falls was reported in the press to have been completed for
a budget of $11 million which is relatively modest by most standards. The
budget was helped along with the use of a new director, a couple of new-to-the-movies
leading actors, a film shoot in Australia, and a hand puppeteering creature.
imho - Emma Caulfield attempts to put some sanity in this narrow
minded town. Chaney Kley is the only person grounded in reality while he
tries to convince the rest of the folks that the Tooth Fairy spirit does
in fact exist. The light plot and accompanying script makes for a tough
sell. Then try to keep this entire production a PG-13 rating and one is
forced to keep out the gory details. So director Jonathan Liebesman uses
a potpourri of dark lighting tricks and sound to support the scary Tooth
Fairy. The excellent original music complete with a symphonic score and
horrific sound effects supports the story line as well as the appearances
of the Tooth Fairy. The younger audience may want to keep their ears covered
if they are sensitive to noise. You can thank multiple Academy Award®
winner Stan Winston of Stan Winston Creatures for the creature. Do not
look for complex subplots or in depth character building but you will have
a full time effort trying to keep up with the bodies that seem to disappear
at an ever increasing rate.
The two young actors Joshua Anderson and Emily Browning who played the
young Kyle and Caitlin during the opening did a wonderful job. Emily is
building up quite a filmography for someone so young. I would expect to
see her in more future films. Kudos to the other young actor Lee Cormie
who plays Michael Greene as Caitlin Greene's younger brother terrorized
by the Tooth Fairy.
As for director Jonathan Liebesman, I look forward to more of his future
movies.
This movie is one of expectations. Find a movie theatre with a great
sound system then locate a large box of popcorn while you make yourself
comfortable. Be prepared to loose track of the body count on your journey
through the darkness. A good entertaining movie for those that need to
fulfill their need to scream.
