- Qualcomm Stadium field preparation - Some 200,000
square feet of sod is being placed on he stadium field starting Friday
2 January in preparation for Super bowl XXXII. It arrived in a caravan
of 50 trucks. The Turf was grown at West Coast Turf in Coachella Valley
southeast of Palm Springs. West Coast Turf also sods 3Com Park in San Francisco
for the Giants and 49ers. They also provided the sod for the 1996 Super
Bowl in Tempe Arizona and the 1995 Super Bowl in Miami. That's right, California
turf brought all the way to the east coast.
The turf is a mixture of Bermuda overseeded with rye. It will be used for
one game only at a cost of $100,000. The Bermuda is for toughness and the
rye is for color. Read that, the Bermuda is for the team players and the
rye is for the TV viewers. You have to do something, Bermuda goes dormant
during the winter time.
